watering

Water your Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema cvs.) weekly to keep it healthy and vibrant. Water until the top 1 to 2 inches of soil are moist. Be sure not to let the soil get soggy or overly wet, to prevent root rot. Fertilize biweekly with a half-strength, water-soluble fertilizer in spring and summer. Water with lukewarm water and avoid getting the leaves wet. Dampen the soil to the depth of the pot during winter when growth is slow. Chinese evergreens are quite tolerant of drought, so if you forget to water for a week or 2, they’ll usually be fine.

sunlight

Chinese evergreen is a great indoor plant for those who want a colorful plant to liven up their spaces. Like other indoor plants, Chinese evergreen needs bright, indirect sunlight to thrive. When outdoors, it should be placed in a partially shaded area and away from direct sunlight. For indoor plants, a spot near a window that receives bright but indirect light would be ideal, since direct sunlight can injure or even kill the leaves of this species. Depending on the season, Chinese evergreen will need different amounts of sunlight. During spring and summer, it should have a minimum of 6 hours of bright, indirect light per day. During the fall and winter, Chinese evergreen can tolerate lower light conditions and can survive with a minimum of 4-5 hours of bright, indirect light per day.

pruning

Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema cvs.) should be pruned sparingly and only when the foliage begins to look crowded or when the appearance of the plant begins to diminish due to overgrowth. It is best to prune 1 or 2 leaves at a time, leaving 1 or 2 pairs of leaves intact. Avoid cutting away too much of the foliage at once, as this can put the plant into shock and slow its growth rate. Prune the plant during the spring and summer months, when the plant is actively growing, to promote compact, healthy growth.
