Crested Wheat Grass

Crested Wheat Grass should be watered regularly and deeply to maintain optimal health. This species should be watered once a week, providing approximately 1 inch of water during each session. A good rule of thumb to follow is to water until the soil is saturated and the top few inches of soil are moist. Additionally, if the plant is in a pot, make sure to check the bottom of the pot for any standing water. Keep in mind that this plant likes dry conditions, so it is best not to over-water it.

Crested Wheat Grass needs full sun to grow well and should get at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. However, this species can tolerate partial shade, and some varieties can even survive with just 4-5 hours of light per day. It's best to provide as much light as possible while still maintaining a proper balance with other environmental factors, such as humidity, temperature, and soil moisture. In addition, it may be beneficial to allow for some periods of shade, particularly during times of high heat and humidity.

Crested Wheat Grass should be pruned in late spring when new growth is 4-6 inches tall. Pruning should be light, removing only 1/3 of the grass foliage at a time. This will help keep plants from competing for nutrients and also promote fuller foliage. Pruning should be done with sharp shears or a weed whacker with plastic blades attached. Regular mowing, to a height of 2-4 inches, should also be done throughout the growing season to help control weeds and encourage healthy growth.
