false rue anemone

Enemion biternatum

False Rue Anemone (Enemion biternatum) is an amazing plant species due to its delicate beauty and unique toughness. False rue anemone grows best in part shade and moist, rich soil with good drainage. Its many deeply divided, lobed leaves appear in early spring, just ahead of its small white flowers, which contrast beautifully with its carpets of foliage. Its thick rootstock and drought-resistant stems make it ideal for areas that receive little water, and its low-growing habit keeps it from overtaking other plants in the garden. False rue anemone is a hardy addition to any landscape, which, when planted in the right conditions, will thrive for many years.

watering

False rue anemone can thrive in moist soils, so keep it slightly moist but not overly wet. Water it directly in the soil when the top inch becomes dry and give it approximately 1-2 inches of water every 1-2 weeks. During particularly dry periods, water it more frequently. If planted in a container, the soil should be checked weekly for moisture. In the summer, the false rue anemone will benefit from occasional misting especially if grown indoors.

sunlight

False rue anemone (Enemion biternatum) does best with bright, indirect sunlight throughout the day. This plant should get the equivalent of a few hours of direct morning sunlight each days, but avoid direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day (generally from 11am-4pm). Any more than a few hours of direct sunlight each day can cause the plant to become scorched and damaged. In shadier conditions, the plant may become leggy and need to be moved gradually into brighter light to flower.

pruning

False Rue Anemone (Enemion biternatum) is best pruned back in late winter before new growth begins in spring. This should be done each year to keep the plant looking tidy and encourage additional blooms. When pruning, only the dead, woody stems should be removed. The green, living stems should be left untouched as these are where buds that fully bloom will form. Removing too much growth will reduce the number of blooms in the season. For annual maintenance, it’s best to simply trim back any dead stems and thin out any overly crowded and overlapping foliage. For a more thorough prune, dead stems can be completely removed and the stem of the plant can be cut back to a desirable height. This can be done once every 2-3 years for the best results.
