Heliopsis 'Helhan' LORAINE SUNSHINE

The ox-eye daisy, formally known as Heliopsis 'Helhan' LORAINE SUNSHINE, is a bright and cheerful wildflower. It's a perennial plant with clusters of daisy-like flowers that grow to a height of 1.2m-1.5m. The petals have a creamy white centre and a bright yellow edge, surrounding a striking dark copper disc. It blooms between mid-spring and late summer, and will happily grow in partial shade or full sun depending on its conditions. An undemanding plant, its good looks will bring a touch of sunshine to any garden year after year.

watering

Ox-eye daisies need regular watering to remain healthy and happy. During the summer, Ox-eye daisies should be watered deeply once a week or more often if the weather is especially hot and dry. In the autumn months, watering can be reduced to every 2 weeks, and during the winter, when the plants are dormant, they should be watered no more than once a month. Make sure that when you water the daisies you give them enough moisture so that the soil is evenly moist but do not over water. Too much water can cause the plants to become waterlogged and end up rotting the roots.

sunlight

Ox-eye daisies need at least 4–5 hours of direct sunlight each day to thrive. Although they can tolerate partial shade, they will not grow as vigorously and bloom as abundantly in less than full sun conditions. Avoid planting them in areas with shade that lasts for longer than half of the day. The ideal spot for a Loraine Sunshine ox-eye daisy is 1 that is sunny in the morning and afternoon with some light shade midday.

pruning

Ox-eye daisies should be pruned annually in late spring (April-May) or early summer (June). Pruning should consist of cutting the plant back by about 1-third to 1-half, removing any dead or damaged stems and flowerheads and removing any dead flowers that have turned brown. This helps to promote healthy new growth. Cut spent flower heads back to the nearest set of leaves and trim wayward stems back to the strong established stems in the center of the plant. This will keep the plant from becoming overgrown and keep it looking tidy. For plants that have become woody, it may be necessary to cut them back even further.
