Hosta sieboldiana

Hosta sieboldiana are commonly referred to as "Giant' Hosta, because of their large leaves and rugged stalks. These bushy perennial plants produce tall, fleshy stalks that can reach a height of up to 28 inches. The foliage of these plants have beautiful dark-green or green-blue lobed leaves that turn to amazing shades of yellow and gold during fall. Hosta sieboldiana prefers a moist, well-drained soil in a partially-shaded area to thrive. In spring, they bloom spikes of fragrant, bell-shaped purple and white flowers. These plants are perfect landscape choices for flower beds and borders.

watering

Hostas should be watered on a regular basis, but avoid over-watering. Water your hosta plant deeply, giving it a thorough soaking every 7-10 days. To do so, water the soil around the base of the hosta until it is damp to a depth of about 8-12 inches. In hot, dry weather, you may need to water more frequently. If the leaves begin to brown, it can be a sign of underwatering. Make sure to check the soil before you water it to ensure it is not overly wet due to rain.

sunlight

Hosta sieboldiana is an outdoor plant species, that requires sunlight in order to grow and thrive. As an understory plant, Hosta sieboldiana prefers bright, indirect sunlight. This means that direct sunlight should be avoided, as this can lead to scorching of the leaves. Therefore, the ideal amount of sunlight is dappled light, in the form of filtered sunlight for several hours a day. Ideally, the plant should receive 4 to 5 hours of sunlight per day, either in the morning or late afternoon. During the summer months, when days are longer, they can tolerate up to 8 or 9 hours a day of filtered sunlight. During the winter months, light decreases, and the plant should receive no more than 4 to 5 hours of light per day.

pruning

Hosta plants should be pruned annually, with the largest and oldest plants needing the most frequent pruning. During early spring is the best time of year to prune hostas. Generally, when new shoots appear on the plant, simply trim off any dead or damaged leaves or stems. To further shape the plant, prune any plants that have grown above the desired level. When it is time to divide or relocate a hosta plant, prune it down to the ground and dig up the whole plant to divide and replant.
