Hosta (Tardiana Group) 'Blue Danube'

Hosta (Tardiana Group) 'Blue Danube' is a vibrant and hardy perennial with oblong-shaped deep green leaves with thin, white margins. Those striking, white variegations bring tones of blue and lavender to the garden. In the summer, the heart-shaped leaves reach full size and are situated on thick, scalloped stems. It produces rosylavender blooms on 30-inch spikes. With a slow, but steady growth rate, this hosta offers plenty of substance and texture that will light up any garden. Its strong variegations will be a highlight in mixed or shrub borders.

watering

When watering your hostas, remember to water them deeply but not too often. During the spring and summer, hostas should be watered anywhere from 1 to 3 times per week, depending on the weather, soil & location. Make sure the soil is slightly moist but not soggy. During the winter months, reduce watering to once a week or even less if the temperatures are very low. When watering, pour the water around the base of the plant until it begins to saturate the soil. Avoid getting the leaves wet, as this can cause rot or disease.

sunlight

Hosta (Tardiana Group) 'Blue Danube' needs bright sunlight but not direct sun for a healthy growth. This plant species is a shade-loving perennial and can tolerate 2-4 hours of morning sunlight or light dappled shade for the entire day. While they can tolerate more sunlight if the temperatures are not too hot, it is important to ensure proper light in order to get the best color from the variegated leaves.

pruning

Hosta should only be pruned if it is becoming overgrown or unruly after flowering. Hosta is usually pruned in late summer or early fall & should be done after the final flowering of the season and before the plant enters dormancy for the winter. Pruning can be done by removing any wilted or dead leaves, cutting back the leaves to a desired length, or cutting whole stems and foliage back to the ground. Be sure to use sharp, clean pruning tools when pruning and always sterilize them between uses. This species generally grows best when trimmed by no more than about a 1/4 of its current height.
