Norway spruce

Picea abies 'Pumila'

Also Known As - Norwegian Spruce
The Norway spruce (Picea abies 'Pumila') is an evergreen conifer with a handsome pyramidal shape, beautiful emerald needles, and soft texture. Growing up to 25 feet tall with a 6 to 12 foot width, it looks wonderful when planted in a line or as a single specimen. Fitting into USDA Hardiness Zones 2-7, this sun-loving species needs ample moisture and humus-rich soil to thrive. It is especially great for use as a privacy and wind screen when planted together. An easy to care for and attractive species, Norway Spruce is an excellent choice for any landscape.

watering

Norway spruce (Picea abies 'Pumila') prefers moist soil, so water when the top inch or 2 of soil appears dry. Water the soil to a depth of at least 1 foot, taking care to avoid wetting the foliage. During the growing season, water Norway spruce regularly for best results. In hot and dry climates, water weekly or every other week if rainfall is scarce. In cooler climates, water less often, allowing the top inch or 2 of soil to dry out between waterings. Water the spruce deeply, soaking the soil, and then stop watering until the soil is dry. In winter, reduce watering to only occasionally, usually only when the soil appears dry.

sunlight

Norway spruce (Picea abies 'Pumila') should receive full sun in order to grow and thrive. This tree prefers full sunlight for at least 6-8 hours of direct exposure each day. It can withstand a bit more shade but it will not grow as well if not given at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight. It thrives in sunny northern climates but can also do quite well in other climates that have sufficient sunlight.

pruning

Norway spruce (Picea abies 'Pumila') should be pruned in late winter or early spring to maintain its size and shape. Pruning in winter forces new growth in the spring. Large branches should be pruned gradually over several years. For general shaping, remove no more than 10-15 percent of the tree's foliage. Also remove any dead or damaged branches that may be present. Remove old candles, or growth, of at least 2 years old. Prune the lower branches if they become overcrowded. When pruning, make sure to use sharp and clean pruning tools, and to make sure all cuts are made cleanly and at a slight angle. Take care not to prune excessively.
