watering

Japanese pieris plants should be watered when the top inch of soil is dry. In general, water once or twice a week and provide enough liquid so that it penetrates the entire root system. For established plants, provide 1 to 2 inches of water every week during the growing season (Spring and Summer). During dry spells, it's best to water more frequently but with less water each time. During the winter months, reduce watering to once a month.

sunlight

Pieris japonica requires at least 4-5 hours of direct sunlight each day for healthy growth and flowering. It is highly tolerant of full sun and partial shade. Morning sun is ideal, but afternoon sun will work too when high temperatures do not exceed 85°F (29°C). In hotter climates, direct afternoon sun should be avoided to avoid scorching and wilting.

pruning

Japanese pieris should be pruned in spring, shortly after flowering finishes. Prune lightly, removing no more than a third of the plant material each year. Remove any weak, damaged, or dead branches, as well as any shoots that may be crossing. Thinning towards the center of the plant is desirable. Shape the overall form of the plant by removing wayward branches, and undesirable inwardly growing shoots.
