watering

Japanese pieris should be watered deeply once a week or so during the summer. Water should be applied to the soil until it reach the surface. During the fall and winter months, the plants will typically require less watering. Once in a while, a deep watering is still necessary during the winter months to release salts that accumulate in the soil. Additionally, water from rain or irrigation should be drained away from at least the base of the plant.

sunlight

Japanese pieris (Pieris japonica 'Nocturne') prefers bright, indirect sunlight or filtered sunlight, but should be kept out of direct sunlight. This plant should be placed in a window that has access to some sunlight for about 4 or 5 hours each day. If your Japanese pieris does not receive enough sunlight, it can become leggy and floppy. During the summer months your Japanese pieris should be placed outdoors in a shaded area for a few hours each day. This will help to keep the plant healthy and vigorous.

pruning

Pruning of Japanese Pieris (Pieris japonica 'Nocturne') should be done twice a year, once in early spring (March to April) and again in mid to late summer (July to August). In spring pruning, old, dead branches should be removed from the plant. Additionally, stems can be thinned to open up the shrub’s interior and to allow more light to reach the inner foliage. In summer, pruning can be done to maintain a desired shape or size of the shrub. As when pruning any plant, try to avoid removing too much material at once.
