Scotch pine

Pinus sylvestris 'Hindu-Pan'

Scotch Pine (Pinus sylvestris 'Hindu-Pan') is an evergreen conifer with pyramidal habit and upright growing habit. It has dark green needles with a silver-blue underside visible from a distance. The needles are grouped in bundles of two and are short, and the bark is reddish-brown and scaly. The cones are 3–7 cm long, greenish-black at maturity and can remain attached to the tree for several years. This hardy species is capable of surviving both cold and dry climates and is tolerant of urban conditions. With proper care, it can live for up to 200 years or more. Ideal for landscaping, it's an excellent choice as a screening tree or as a specimen in park and habitat gardens.

watering

Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris 'Hindu-Pan') is a fast-growing evergreen tree that needs a moderate amount of watering. This pine prefers moist, well-drained soil and should have access to adequate water. For proper growth, it should be watered every 3-4 days during its first growing season if rainfall is insufficient. During its first year, it is best to water thoroughly and deeply to encourage deep root growth. In subsequent years, water should be applied every 7-10 days during the spring and summer months. A vast amount of water should be withheld during the fall and winter months since the plant is typically dormant during that period. It is also important to monitor soil moisture, because too much water can prevent absorption of oxygen by the roots of the tree. As a general rule, watering the tree when the soil has dried out and its roots have begun to search for water is ideal.

sunlight

Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris 'Hindu-Pan') is a conifer that grows best when it receives direct sunlight for more than 4 hours each day, particularly between 10:00am and 4:00pm. During the summer months, Scotch pine should receive at least 6 hours of sunshine a day to ensure its best growth and health. However, when in a shade environment, Scoty pine should be provided with no less than 4 full hours of direct sunlight each day. While too much sun can damage this species, too little also decreases growth rates and causes a decrease in vigor. Ambient temperatures should also be taken into account when providing sunlight, as cooler temperatures (such as early in the morning) should be allowed for more shade, as well as periods in the hot part of the day when the tree can rest in a shaded area.

pruning

Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris 'Hindu-Pan') should be pruned during the winter, when the tree is in its dormant period. Pruning should be done selectively, removing only dead or diseased branches, and thinning out areas that have too much growth. The pruning cuts should be made just slightly outside the branch collar, to minimize damage and promote healing and regrowth. When finished, Scotch pines should have an overall rounded shape, with an open center, which allows for adequate air circulation, light penetration and leaf growth.
