oriental plane tree

Platanus orientalis

Also Known As - oriental sycamore
Oriental Plane tree (Platanus orientalis) is an old-world, deciduous tree species native to the Middle East and southeast Europe. Reaching heights of up to 80 feet, this tree has a unique pyramidal shape and large, palmate leaves. The trunk bark is often greyish-tan, flaky, and patterned. In summertime, clusters of small, greenish-yellow flowers bloom, followed by light brown seed heads. Thriving in full to partial sun, Oriental Plane tree requires average amounts of water while young, but once mature, it needs very little water. Although it is tolerant of urban pollution, it prefers well-drained soil. Oriental Plane tree is an excellent choice for courtyard gardens, parks, and urban landscapes.

watering

Watering an Oriental Plane Tree should be done once or twice a week, depending on the season and the plant’s environment. During summer and hot weather periods, these trees need more water to ensure their growth and health. The best way to ensure adequate water without over-watering is to use a drip irrigation system or to check the soil with a finger to ensure that the soil is moist 6-8 inches below the top of the soil. Water thoroughly so that the water reaches the deeper roots, and aim for 1-2 inches of water each time. Make sure you water your tree at its base, and avoid wetting its leaves, as this could lead to scorching from the sun.

sunlight

Oriental plane trees thrive in full sun and require around 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight each day for optimal growth. While full sun is ideal, in warmer climates with intense sunlight, these trees can also tolerate partial shade, especially during the hottest hours of the day. It is important to be mindful of providing enough daylight if planting in shady areas; these trees will become lanky and weak with too little sun.

pruning

Oriental plane trees (Platanus orientalis) should be pruned in late winter or early spring, before bud break. Pruning should be moderate in nature and should consist of minor structural trimming and deadwood removal. During the first few years, the tree should only be lightly pruned to allow for optimal growth and establishment. Once the tree matures, pruning should remove any suckers and weak branches while shortening long branches to encourage thick foliage. Fruit production should also be controlled through selective pruning. Pruning should be done with caution as the bark of the tree is thin and easily damaged.
