watering

Solomon's Seal requires moist soils with good drainage. The best time to water the plant is in the morning or evening. During the growing season – typically late spring until late fall – it should be watered at least 1 inch per week, although more frequent watering (up to twice per week) is recommended during periods of extreme heat or drought. During the winter months, the soil should remain relatively dry, as overwatering during this period can lead to root rot.

sunlight

Solomon's seal thrives in consistently moist, soil enriched with organic matter and partial to full shade. It enjoys some morning sunlight or dappled shade throughout the day. It should not be exposed to direct, scorching afternoon sunlight, which may damage the plant's foliage and flowers. It is best to place this perennial where it will receive some light at least 6 to 8 hours a day. In cold climates, ideally, the plant should receive shade in the hottest part of the day, with filtered sunlight or dappled shade (light coming through a tree canopy) in the morning and early afternoon.

pruning

Solomon's seal (Polygonatum odoratum 'Byakko') should be pruned in early spring, just as growth begins. Pruning should be done no more than a third of the stems at a time. Start at the top of the plant and gradually work your way down. Cut away dead and diseased stems, thinning the center of the clump where needed. To maintain the shape of the plant, remove old wood that has flower stalks. Prune the stems down to the ground, leaving no more than 2 to 3 buds. This will promote fuller growth.
