Prunus laurocerasus 'Otto Luyken'

Also Known As - cherry laurel
Cherry Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus 'Otto Luyken') is an evergreen shrub with lustrous dark green foliage and white flowers in early summer. It is an upright grower and is often used as a privacy hedge. It is tolerant of many soil types and pruning and will happily grow in partial shade. The 'Otto Luyken' cultivar is especially hardy and grows to around 12 feet tall. In spring, it is covered with fragrant white flowers that attract birds and wildlife. The foliage takes on a deep red-purple hue in winter which brightens up any dull, cold months. Cherry laurel is a great addition to any garden.

watering

The cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus 'Otto Luyken') prefers moist, well-drained soil. It should be watered deeply and evenly during the growing season (summer months). Water thoroughly throughout the growing season when the top 2-3 inches of soil is dry to the touch. Avoid overly wet or soggy soil. Reduce frequency of watering when the plant matures and temperatures become cooler. During cold, blight winter months do not water and allow the soil to become drier.

sunlight

Cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus 'Otto Luyken') is a low-maintenance evergreen shrub that requires at least 6 hours of sunlight a day. It can thrive in direct sunlight or in partial shade, but it's best if it gets some direct sun in the morning and some indirect sun in the afternoon. In cooler climates, it should receive as much as possible direct sun during the summer months. In warmer climates, its best to keep the cherry laurel in the sun during the cooler morning hours and provide it with shade during the hottest part of the day (generally midday).

pruning

Cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus 'Otto Luyken') should be pruned in late winter or early spring to control its size and shape. To do this, remove the oldest shoots at ground level and any branches crossing over each other. Prune the remaining lateral branches to a length of 4-6 inches as needed. It's also important to remove any dead or diseased branches as soon as possible. If required, prune back any over-long shoots to a more manageable size. Doing this will encourage a bushier habit and better flowering. The more densely branched it is, the more flowers it will produce.
