watering

Black elder (Sambucus nigra 'Guincho Purple') should be watered once every 4 to 7 days. The soil should be moist but not soggy. Before watering your plant, check the soil to make sure it is not too dry. If the soil is drying out too quickly, consider adding a layer of mulch to help the soil retain moisture. During the summer months, Black Elder may need to be watered more often. Make sure to check the soil for dryness to avoid over-watering.

sunlight

Black Elder (Sambucus nigra 'Guincho Purple') is a plant species that prefers full sun, or at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. The best time of day to provide the sunlight exposure is during mid-morning to mid-afternoon, when the intensity of the sunlight is highest. The sun’s rays should reach all of the plant’s leaves, branches and flowers for optimal growth. Planting in a south-facing area is best.Care should be taken to ensure that the plants do not burn from too much exposure.

pruning

Black Elder (Sambucus nigra 'Guincho Purple') should be pruned in early spring before new growth appears. Pruning should include removing dead, damaged, and crossing branches and then selectively cutting back some of the longest shoots. This will help to encourage new shoots and stimulate the formation of flowers and berries. Pruning should not exceed 1/3 of the entire plant's volume. Remember to always use sharp pruners and make cuts cleanly and above a set of leaves or buds.
