watering

The European fan palm (Chamaerops humilis) should be watered 1-2 times per week, depending on the season and the amount of sun exposure. In the summer months, when the plant is exposed to full sun or extra hot temperatures, they will require more frequent watering, up to 3 times per week. In the winter months, when temperatures are cooler and the sun is less intense, water will be needed less frequently (about once a week) or only as needed when the soil begins to dry out. When watering European fan palms, aim to keep the soil moist but not saturated. If the soil gets too wet, the palm's roots may rot. Therefore, be sure to check the soil moisture before giving the plants more water.

sunlight

The European fan palm (Chamaerops humilis) thrives best in a Mediterranean climate with lots of sun. To ensure optimal growth, the plant should receive at least 6 to 8 hours of direct, full sunlight each day, but some morning and/or late afternoon shade should be provided. The European fan palm can tolerate temperatures as low as 15°F for certain periods of time, so shade should be provided in areas with extreme weather changes. Water requirements are sparse, however, for best results, water should be given regularly—especially during periods of prolonged heat or drought.

pruning

European fan palm (Chamaerops humilis) should be pruned twice a year: once in early spring (March or April) and once in late summer (August or September). Pruning should be minimal, as too much can damage the plant. Start by removing any dead, diseased, or damaged fronds. Then, clip off any brown tipped or damaged leaves on the fronds. Finally, trim off all fronds that do not fit the overall shape of the plant. Be sure to leave at least 3 fronds per stem to ensure that the plant can continue to receive energy from photosynthesis.
