Parkia timoriana

The tree bean (Parkia timoriana) is a medium to large evergreen tree found in tropical coastal and lowland areas of the Pacific islands. It has an umbrella shaped canopy and reaches heights of 20-30 meters with a trunk of up to one meter in diameter. The leaves are alternate, compound and leathery with leaflets up to 30 cm in length. The foliage is an attractive dark-green hue. Its pendulous flowers blossom between the months of August and September and are greeted by a long cylindrical pod which contains edible Legume seeds. These seeds have a flavour akin to roasted peanuts and are a traditional food in many Polynesian cuisines.

watering

Tree bean should be watered once every week, providing 1-2 inches of water for each watering. It can become drought tolerant once it is established, but during the first year, regular watering is necessary to help it get established. Be sure to check the soil moisture before watering each time to ensure adequate levels. In summer, it may need to be watered more often if the weather is hot and dry.

sunlight

Tree bean (Parkia timoriana) is an evergreen tropical tree species native to Southeast Asia. It typically requires 14 hours of direct sunlight per day when young. As it matures, it can become tolerant of partial shade and some varieties may even require less sunlight. It is important to provide your tree beans with adequate sunlight to ensure optimal growth and development.

pruning

Tree bean plants (Parkia timoriana) should be pruned in late February annually. Pruning should be done in order to maintain a healthy shape, support maximal flower and pod production, and remove any undesirable growth from the plant. When pruning, remove only dead, diseased, or broken branches that grow in awkward directions. Do not prune more than 30%-50% of the total branch volume in 1 season, as this can be too stressful for the tree. Pruning in late February should give the tree adequate time to recover and replenish itself before its growth cycle in the new season.
