Red twig dogwood should be watered deeply approximately once every week during the growing season (spring to fall). Be sure to check the soil prior to watering to make sure it's not already wet. The dogwood prefers even moisture and does not tolerate overly soggy conditions. Water the plant until the soil is saturated. Additionally, provide a deep watering if the plant is showing signs of stress from drought, such as wilting or droopy branches.

The red twig dogwood (Cornus sericea 'Hedgerows Gold') needs at least 5 hours of direct sunlight a day, although it will do best with a full day’s sun. If it is grown in a shady area, the vibrant color of the stems will not be as intense as they would be given more sun exposure. In particular, during mid-winter when the sun's intensity is lower, it will need to be in a more sunny area to achieve the best possible red variety.

Red Twig dogwood should be pruned in late winter or early spring. The best time to prune a Red Twig Dogwood is after the shrub has gone completely dormant, usually right before spring. Pruning should be minimal and focus on thinning the shrub to better show off its branching. Remove no more than ⅓ of the stems and avoid pruning any stems that are more than 4” in diameter. To maintain the attractive red stems, pruning should be done yearly.
