watering

Crinkled hair grass generally prefers moist, fertile soil and regular watering. In the spring and summer months it should be watered once per week if natural rainfall does not meet the 0.75-1.25 inches of required water for the week. During the fall and winter months, when the plant is dormant, it does not need to be watered as frequently and can go several weeks without any additional watering. If your area does not get enough rainfall and a weekly watering isn't possible, supplement once every 2-3 weeks with enough water to just barely moisten the soil.

sunlight

Crinkled hair grass (Deschampsia flexuosa) prefers full sun for most of the growing season (late spring to early fall), but can tolerate partial shade for much of the summer. It needs at least 4 hours of direct sunlight each day during its peak growing season and can tolerate up to 8 hours. However, during the winter and early spring months, little to no direct sunlight is required.

pruning

Crinkled hair grass should be pruned in early spring or late fall. However, the amount of pruning should be minimal and only the dead or diseased leaves should be removed, along with any brown and yellowing foliage. Also, it is important to not prune more than a third of the height and volume of the grass at 1 time. This species is a slow grower so pruning too much can have lasting negative effects.
