watering

Gladiolus 'Flevo Ocean' needs to be watered regularly and thoroughly. During the growing season when the plant is actively growing (spring to early fall), water it about once a week if the top 2 inches of soil is dry. In the hotter months and during prolonged dry spells, water more frequently - about every 3 to 4 days. When watering, give the soil a good soaking so that the water penetrates deep into the soil - this encourages strong, healthy roots. When the weather starts to become cooler, reduce watering slightly. The plant should still be checked and watered when the top 2 inches of soil are dry.

sunlight

Gladiolus 'Flevo Ocean' requires full sun for 6-8 hours each day in order to grow and bloom properly. When planted outdoors, it should be positioned in an area that receives plenty of direct sunlight throughout the day. If planted indoors, it should be close to a bright, sunny window or given supplemental lighting in order to fulfill its light needs. Additionally, make sure to provide enough space so the plant is able to spread its foliage and reach its full size potential.

pruning

Gladiolus 'Flevo Ocean' should be pruned during mid-summer in order to maintain its best appearance. When pruning, remove any dead bloom spikes down to the base of the spike. This helps to keep the plant healthy and encourages continued blooming. Additionally, remove faded flower blooms so that the plant can put its energy into developing new blooms. Prune away any damage to the foliage such as yellow or wilted leaves. Be sure to not cut too much and to always leave at least 1 third of the leaves on each plant. Fertilize with a high-quality, balanced fertilizer once a month and add a layer of mulch in early spring to help retain moisture around the roots.
