watering

Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Song Sparrow') should be watered deeply and regularly during the early part of its growing season, which is typically spring and summer. Generally the soil should be kept evenly moist – not too wet or too dry – with frequent watering so that it doesn’t dry out. In cooler weather, water once a week or less; in warmer weather, water every 3-4 days. In particularly hot and dry weather, it’s important to keep daylilies watered more frequently, as their blooms will suffer if water is withheld.

sunlight

Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Song Sparrow') should receive a minimum of 4 hours of direct sunlight daily for the best performance. Newly planted daylilies may take some time to adjust to the new light levels and should generally receive within 4-5 hours of sun during the early growing season. If possible, the best time to receivelight is in the morning from 7am to 11am. The midday sun exposure should be reduced in particularly hot climates as it can be too intense and may result in scorching of the leaves. Some afternoon sun can be beneficial as well but the intensity should be closely monitored to ensure the plant is not becoming stressed. By the end of the season, daylilies should generally receive 5-6 hours of sunlight each day.

pruning

Daylilies (Hemerocallis 'Song Sparrow') should be pruned annually for best flowering and health of the plant. Pruning should be done in the late winter or early spring when the plant is still dormant. Pruning should involve removing any dead or damaged foliage, yellowed leaves or any damaged stems. Stems should also be cut back to 6 inches, unless the variety is a very tall 1. This will encourage new growth and a bushier plant. It's also a good idea for gardeners to divide daylilies every 3 to 5 years to keep them healthy and vigorous.
