watering

Daylilies should be kept moist, but not soggy or wet. Water the plant deeply and evenly when the top 2-3” of the soil (not the mulch) begin to feel dry. During periods of active growth, water this plant every 5 -7 days. During the winter, when the plant is dormant, you can reduce the frequency of watering. It is best to water this plant in the morning to give the foliage a chance to dry out before nightfall. This helps reduce the potential of disease.

sunlight

Daylilies in general prefer full sun of 6 to 8 hours a day, although some hybrid varieties, such as the 'Squash Tempura' variety, are more tolerant of shadier conditions. However, for optimal growth it is best to provide as much sun as possible. For leaves to stay healthy and vibrant, full sun in the morning and partial shade in the afternoon is recommended. Planting near a wall or fence to create additional shading during the hottest parts of the day can help provide protection in summer, as can the placement of taller plants near the daylily, such as tall grasses or a shrub.

pruning

Daylilies (Hemerocallis 'Squash Tempura') need to be pruned in order to promote healthy growth and optimize their flowering potential. Pruning should take place in early spring, approximately 2-3 weeks after the plants emerge from the ground. Start by cutting off dead foliage and dead stems at the soil level. Once you have cut away the dead growth, remove any other spent flowers or foliage. During this time, you can also deadhead any flowers that are no longer in bloom. It is also a good time to divide your clumps or root crowns if necessary. Remember to never divide the crowns later than 6 weeks before the plant's blooming time. Finally, light fertilizers can be applied to the soil for added nutrition during the pruning period.
