Water Chinese hostas at least once a week. Water the soil until it is evenly moist but not soggy. Avoid waterpooling in the area around the crown of the plant. In the summer months, water more frequently. Make sure to water plants more heavily during especially bright and sunny days. Provide additional irrigation during periods of extreme heat and/or drought. Monitor the soil moisture and adjust watering levels accordingly. Water in the morning or evening to avoid evaporation and stress to the plant.

Chinese hostas prefer bright indirect sunlight throughout the day. Ideally, they should receive at least 4-6 hours of bright but indirect sunlight each day. When there is intense afternoon sunlight, you can place them in light shade or filter the light through a sheer curtain to reduce the amount of direct sunlight. You can also move the hosta a bit further from the window, uncovered so it can receive the morning sunlight but be in the shade during the mid-day heat. During the winter months, where days are shorter and light is less intense, you can keep them in a sunnier position.

It is also a good idea to cut back the shoots that have become too long. This helps to promote a fuller, more bushy plant. When pruning Chinese hostas, be sure to make your cuts above a leaf node, otherwise the plant will not be able to recover. You can also pinch back the stems to encourage a bushier shape. Additionally, always use sharp, clean pruners to avoid deep cuts that can damage the plant.
