Smooth hydrangeas should be watered about 1-2inches per week, but not more than 1-2inches at a time. During periods of extreme drought, water more frequently and deeply. Water plants in the morning to allow the foliage to dry which will help to prevent leaf and stem diseases. For best plant health, avoid wetting the foliage and water directly to the ground. If drought conditions persist for an extended period, then water deeply once every 7-10 days.

Smooth hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) plants prefer partial or dapple shade, though if grown in full sun (for 6 or more hours a day), they will need to be monitored for signs of wilt, leaf scorch, or dieback. To ensure optimal health and bloom production, they should be placed in an area with some shade in the hotter parts of the day. This means that the majority (around 4 hours) of the necessary sunlight should be acquired in the morning or late afternoon/early evening, when the sun isn't at its strongest.

Smooth hydrangeas should be pruned each year in late winter or early spring. Prune the shrubs down to 8-12 inches in height by removing all of the old wood as well as any dead or broken branches. This will help encourage vigorous, new growth throughout the season. In addition, selectively thinning out some of the interior branches (as well as deadheading spent blossoms) will help to keep the overall shape of the shrub and will keep it healthy and vibrant.
