Lagerstroemia indica 'Hopi'

Crape Myrtle, also known as Lagerstroemia indica 'Hopi', is a beautiful fast-growing flowering shrub with bark that displays colorful patches of peeling bark during the fall and winter. It blooms with exotic crepe-like flowers in elegant vibrant pink, lavender, and purple shades. The Crape Myrtle offers a great choice for a privacy hedge, background planting, and screening. It requires only minimal pruning and frequent watering and is tolerant to both heat and drought. This stunner is ideal to showcase on your yard and can survive both in sun and shade. Low maintenance, excellent flowering performance, and incredible beauty make this plant a worthwhile addition to your garden.

watering

Crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica 'Hopi') should be watered on a regular basis. In warm, dry weather, water the plant deeply and thoroughly. It's important to water at the base of the plant rather than from above, as this will help protect against foliage diseases. In order to avoid root rot, water every 3 to 4 days, or up to twice a week in extreme conditions, in the morning or evening to minimize evaporation. During winter months, you can reduce waterings to once every 10 to 12 days. This plant is drought tolerant, and should tolerate dry spells once established as long as the soil has good drainage.

sunlight

Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica 'Hopi') will perform best in full sun, meaning 6-7 hours of direct sunlight per day. Crape Myrtle should be planted in an area that will receive plenty of direct sun during the middle of the day when the sun is hottest, preferably from 10 am-5 pm. Full afternoon sun is also important for the best flowering display. Partial shade, or morning sun only, can cause them to produce fewer blooms.

pruning

For Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica ‘Hopi’), the best time to prune is in late winter, just before new growth begins. Prune selectively to remove dead and crowded branches, and to shape the plant. Aim to keep the plant well-balanced and allow good airflow between the branches. Avoid removing more than 1 third of the branches in a single pruning. Make clean cuts just outside a branch collar using pruning shears or loppers. Pruning may also be done in late summer to reduce new growth and control the size of the plant. However, avoid pruning after late summer/early fall as this may reduce flowering for the following season.
