watering

Chinese juniper should be watered when the soil begins to feel dry, which is usually 1 to 2 times per week. Water should reach a depth of 6 to 8 inches and it is best to water slowly and at the base of the plant to prevent rot. If planted in a container, check the soil daily to avoid over-watering. During the growing season Chinese juniper will require more frequent watering, while during the dormant season, it is best to reduce the frequency.

sunlight

Chinese juniper can tolerate full sunlight if it is planted in an area with adequate air movement, although it also thrives in partial sun and shade. This means that 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day is ideal for the plant's growth. During the summer months (June, July and August) when the days are the longest, it's best for the Chinese juniper to have full sun exposure all day. During the spring and fall months, it should be given 8 to 10 hours of direct sunlight. In the winter, when days are shorter, 4 to 6 hours of sun is adequate.

pruning

Chinese juniper requires moderate to heavy pruning once per year. Generally, prune during late winter or early spring before new growth begins. If the shrub is unkempt, prune out up to 1/3 of the oldest, woodiest stems near the base in order to rejuvenate the plant. For maintenance pruning, remove the oldest stems as well as any twigs growing towards the center of the shrub and any crossed or rubbing branches. For aesthetic pruning, thin out, reduce plant size, and remove any wayward branches to maintain the desired shape.
