watering

Watering Japanese privet (Ligustrum japonicum 'Rotundifolium') requires careful attention. Water the soil when it begins to dry out, usually every 7–10 days depending on the season. Water until it is moist throughout, but take care not to overwater, which can lead to root rot. In the hotter months, you may need to water more frequently. Make sure there is adequate drainage, as they do not tolerate standing water.

sunlight

Japanese privet (Ligustrum japonicum 'Rotundifolium') grows best when planted in full sun. It prefers 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day, with some protection from the afternoon sun in very hot climates. In cooler climates, Japanese Privet tolerates partial shade, but it may not bloom and fruit as well as when grown in full sun. In areas where temperatures become very cold in winter this species does need some shelter from the winter sun in order to avoid winter burn.

pruning

Japanese privet (Ligustrum japonicum 'Rotundifolium') should be pruned twice a year. Pruning should start in late winter or early spring, before the new growth begins, to shape the plant and reduce its overall size. Pruning in the summer, after the new growth has stopped, is also beneficial and is done to thin the shrub and maintain its shape. The best time for heavy pruning is in early spring. Always prune back just above a node or bud, so that the new growth emerges from below the cut.
