watering

Water the lily when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry. In summer months, water 1-2 times a week, and in cooler weather water once a week. Be careful not to overwater, this can cause root rot. Apply enough water to saturate the soil up to 4-6 inches deep. This should equal about 1” per week.

sunlight

The Asiatic lily (Lilium 'Algarve') requires full sun for 6-8 hours per day. This species prefers to get its sunlight in the mornings, as opposed to the harsher afternoon sunlight which may damage its sensitive blooms and leaves. While this species will tolerate partial shade during hot summer months, it needs plenty of sunlight to thrive and flower. It is best planted in an area of the garden which will receive direct sun during early morning hours.

pruning

Longiflorum-Asiatic lily (Lilium 'Algarve') should be pruned at the end of the first growing season. During the growing season, dead head spent flowers and remove any weakened or diseased stalks. Once the flowering has finished, cut the stalks and foliage back to about 8 inches tall. This will help to promote healthier foliage and more flowers in the following season. Be careful not to over prune as this can set the plant back and reduce the number of blooms it produces.
