watering

Privet honeysuckle (Lonicera pileata 'Moss Green') should be watered every 7-10 days during the growing season, spring through summer. Water deeply, so that the water just begins to trickle out of the bottom drainage holes. Make sure to completely saturate the root ball, and water until it is evenly moist throughout. Allow the soil to dry out somewhat between waterings, as overwatering can lead to root rot. During the winter months, reduce watering to once every 3-4 weeks as the plant enters a dormant state.

sunlight

Privet honeysuckle (Lonicera pileata 'Moss Green') requires partial sun to full sun exposure for optimal growth and flowering. It will tolerate light shade for some of the day, but too little light could cause the plant to become leggy and reduce flowering. Ideal conditions include 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day, preferably in the morning. It can also thrive in areas with indirect sunlight all day. While direct sunlight will need to be adjusted based on seasonal changes, the amount of light should generally remain consistent throughout the year.

pruning

Privet honeysuckle (Lonicera pileata 'Moss Green') should be pruned twice a year to maintain its shape and form. Generally, pruning should take place in late winter/early spring and mid to late summer. When pruning in late winter/early spring, remove any dead or diseased branches, and any crossing and rubbing branches. This will keep the size and uniformity of the shrub. The shrub can also be lightly trimmed after the flowers have faded in late spring/early summer. Pruning in mid to late summer should involve deadheading or cutting off the spent blooms. This will not only improve the look of the shrub, but will also encourage a second flower flush. It is important to note that since privet honeysuckle does not tolerate strong pruning, it should be lightly sheared, never excessively pruned or harshly clipped.
