Japanese garden juniper

Juniperus procumbens 'Nana'

Also Known As - green mound weeping juniper
Japanese garden juniper (Juniperus procumbens 'Nana') is an evergreen, low-growing shrub with a naturally irregular, compact shape. Aged specimens may reach up to two feet in height, but typically remain smaller. Lush, bright green foliage adorns this hardy groundcover. New foliage may assume a more silvery hue when established in shadier, moist growing conditions. In spring it produces clusters of small gray-blue berries. With a spreading habit of growth, Japanese garden juniper 'Nana' makes an excellent choice for mass plantings, rock gardens and low hedges to provide year-round interest.

watering

Japanese garden juniper (Juniperus procumbens 'Nana') should be watered about once a week or when the top inch of soil in the pot is dry. During the summer, it may be necessary to water more often. Before watering, make sure the soil is not overly saturated. Take care not to overwater, as this can cause root rot. Water the soil slowly and evenly to ensure the water is penetrating the entire root zone. Discard any excess water from the tray after each watering.

sunlight

Japanese garden juniper (Juniperus procumbens 'Nana') prefers 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day for optimal health. During summer months, it should be placed in a spot with morning sun that is partially shaded in the afternoon. During winter, the plant should receive more hours of direct sun; however, some shade during midday is beneficial to protect its delicate foliage.

pruning

Japanese garden juniper should be pruned in late spring through summer. Pruning should be moderate, never removing more than a third of the plant. The aim should be to maintain a low, tight, mounding form by removing any errant or diseased branches and thinning out any overly dense areas. Regular pruning can also help to keep away pests and encourage healthy foliage and growth.
