Water when the top inch or so of the soil is dry, and check the soil’s moisture level regularly (by sticking your finger in to the first knuckle). In summer heat, water regularly but in moderation (about 1”/week) and avoid drenching the plant, as standing water can cause root rot. In cooler seasons, water less often. Additionally, amending the soil with compost or mulch before planting can help with moisture retention.

Start by removing any diseased, damaged, or dead branches or foliage. Cut back the entire plant to 1/3 of its original height to remove old blooms and promote new growth. In mid-summer, snip off any flower stalks that have passed their prime for continued blooming throughout the season. Finally, a light shearing of the plant is beneficial to help it maintain a tight form.
