watering
Dogwood (Cornus 'Rutcan' CONSTELLATION) should be watered every 7 to 10 days during the growing season. During hotter, dryer months, water the Constellation Dogwood plant once a week, making sure that the soil beneath the tree is moist but not overly saturated. Do not water in the wintertime, as this can damage the roots. When watering, ensure that the water reaches the root system and not simply the topsoil. Care should be taken not to overwater, as this can cause root rot. If the area is very dry, consider placing a layer of compost or mulch around the root system to prevent rapid evaporation of soil moisture. In extreme circumstances, or if the area experiences extended drought conditions, the Constellation Dogwood can be given a deeper watering every few weeks.
sunlight
Dogwood (Cornus 'Rutcan' CONSTELLATION) should be planted in an area that receives full sun for at least 6-8 hours a day. If it’s planted in a spot that receives partial or light shade, it will still grow, but it’s flower production will probably be diminished. In general, the more direct sunlight the dogwood receives, the more vivid the blooms and the larger the plant will become. The plant will also appreciate some afternoon shade in hot climates.
pruning
Dogwood (Cornus 'Rutcan' CONSTELLATION) should be pruned in early spring, just before active growth begins. It does not require frequent pruning, but it can be done to control size and shape. Large Limbs and branches should be removed using a pruning saw, loppers, or pruning shears. To reduce the size of the shrub, thin out the oldest branches using the thinning cut method, which is removing the thicker branches from the center of the shrub outward. If the shrub is overgrown, it can also be drastically pruned back to the desired shape. Any leftover stems should be pruned to an outward facing bud to encourage new growth outward, and to help keep the shrub full.
