watering

Sensitive fern should be watered at least once a week during the growing season. The amount of water should be enough to keep the soil lightly moist (not overly wet) throughout the root area of the plant. In hot, dry climates, sensitive fern may require more frequent watering during drought conditions or in areas exposed to full sun. When watering, apply the water slowly and deeply so that it penetrates through the root zone. Checking the soil moisture with your finger 1-2 inches below the soil surface can help you determine the need for watering.

sunlight

Sensitive ferns require at least a few hours of direct sunlight each day in order to thrive. Ideally, the fern should receive several hours of direct sunlight between 10am and 4pm for optimal health and growth. When grown in brighter environments, the plant will likely produce more attractive foliage. Additionally, if the sensitive fern is given too much shade, the fronds will tend to be smaller and darker. If the light is too intense, the fronds may become scorched, so it’s important to protect against strong midday rays with partial sun coverage.

pruning

Sensitive fern should be pruned once annually in late winter or early spring, before new growth begins. Pruning should be done lightly and selectively, focusing mainly on dead or damaged foliage. Remove dead leaves by cutting the foliage at the base of the stem. Remove damaged or diseased leaves by cutting them off at the base of the stem, just above the soil. Trim off any brown or black tips or edges that have developed over the growing season. Lightly trim back the outer edges of the fern to give it a neat, neat shape. When pruning the plant, take care to leave as much viable leaf tissue as possible.
