Knotweed (Persicaria virginiana (Variegata Group) 'Painter's Palette') should be watered 2-3 times per week, depending on the weather conditions and soil moisture. During dry, hot weather, the plant may need additional water, so be sure to check the soil each time. When giving the plant a drink, water deeply and slowly, allowing the water to penetrate the soil to the root level. Once established, the plant should not need additional watering unless the weather conditions have been particularly dry.

Knotweed (Persicaria virginiana (Variegata Group) 'Painter's Palette') requires full sun for best performance and growth. It should get at least 8 hours of direct sunlight each day. During the summer months, it prefers to be in an area with direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day, usually from 10am to 4pm. In the winter, Knotweed still needs direct sun, but slightly less since the sun is less intense. During the winter, it should get at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day, preferably between 10am and 3pm.

Knotweed (Persicaria virginiana (Variegata Group) 'Painter's Palette') should be pruned during late winter or early spring, before new growth begins. Pruning should focus on removing dead, damaged and out-of-place branches, and propping open the plant to allow for light and air circulation. Light, regular pruning will help the plant produce bushy, healthy growth. Large, old plants may be cut back dramatically; however, young plants should not be pruned back heavily until mature size is achieved.
