watering

Jacob's ladder should be watered regularly; however, it does not like wet roots. When the soil feels dry to the touch, it is time to water. Be sure to water directly into the soil and not onto the leaves. In the summer months, Jacob's ladder will need to be watered every 5-7 days; in the spring and fall water every 7-10 days; and in the winter water only about once everyweek or 2. When watering, be sure to give the plant enough to moisten the soil thoroughly. Make sure the soil drains well as this plant does not favor soggy roots.

sunlight

Jacob's ladder (Polemonium caeruleum 'Blanjou' BRISE D'ANJOU) is a shade-loving plant species that thrives best when it is grown in dappled or partially shaded areas. It performs best when it receives bright indirect sunlight for 4-5 hours each day, with some direct sun in the morning or late afternoon. This plant is not tolerant of full sun and will become scorched and bleached if exposed to it for too long. During the summer months, it is best to keep Jacob's ladder out of direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day.

pruning

Jacob's ladder (Polemonium caeruleum 'Blanjou' BRISE D'ANJOU) should be pruned in late winter or early spring just before new growth begins. Prune only light and immediately after flowering, as heavy pruning will reduce flower production. Trim off any dead or damaged stems and thin out the center of the plant to promote new growth and air circulation. Ensure that approximately half the stems are cut from the base of the clump to promote an even shape and good air flow. Remove any weak stems and lightly trim the side stems to improve shape and reduce height. Ultimately, you should aim for a rounded shape that is set around 25 centimeters (10 inches) tall.
