watering

Evergreen Azaleas need regular watering to stay healthy and vibrant. Water at least once a week in summer and every 2 weeks in winter, when the weather is cooler. Let the soil begin to dry out between waterings, and water thoroughly so the soil is moist but not soggy. Be sure to water the root zone – the area around the base and outer edges of the azalea – and avoid wetting the leaves. In hot weather, water more often, possibly twice a week, to keep the soil consistently moist for optimum growth.

sunlight

Evergreen Azalea (Rhododendron 'Sun Star') requires partial shade or filtered sun for 4-6 hours a day. This plant does best when the sun is at its strongest in mid-morning and again in late afternoon, avoiding exposure to direct midday sun. It is important for this species to be planted in a location that allows for good air circulation. It should also be protected from strong winds, as prolonged exposure can cause leaf burn or desiccation. A sheltered area with an eastern or western exposure is ideal for this species.

pruning

Evergreen azaleas, like the popular Rhododendron 'Sun Star' variety, should be pruned in late winter or early spring before the plant starts to put out new growth. Prune only when the plant is at its healthiest. Pruning too soon or too much can delay or stunt bloom. Remove dead or damaged branches first, followed by any branches that ruin the plant's shape or are growing too close to the center of the plant. Cut any branches that are crossing or competing with each other to improve air circulation within the azalea bush. Pruning should be done sparingly, removing no more than 1-third of the total in any 1 season. Aim to maintain the size and shape of the bush but prune back if necessary to keep the plant healthy. Cut at a 45 degree angle for the best results.
