Fragrant Sumac should be watered deeply and infrequently, approximately every 2-3 weeks. To properly water, make sure to saturate the soil evenly, allowing water to trickle down into the root zone. To test if the plant is sufficiently watered, push your finger down about 2 inches into the soil. If the soil is dry, it is time to water again. During the summer months, the plant may need to be watered more often. During this time, make sure to check the soil frequently to ensure that it is not getting overly dry.

Fragrant sumac (Rhus aromatica) prefers full sun exposure for at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight a day. When grown in partial shade, the plant may have reduced flowering and be less vigorous. Specifically, if planted in partial shade, fragrant sumac should be exposed to at least 6-8 hours of filtered sun in order for it to thrive. If planted in full sun, the fragrant sumac should receive direct sunlight for at least 4-6 hours every day. If grown in full shade, the fragrant sumac will not thrive and will eventually die.

Fragrant sumac should be pruned in late winter or early spring, when the plant is still dormant. Pruning should be limited to light shaping or thinning out dense growth, removing no more than 1-third of the total growth. Dead or damaged branches, suckers, and water sprouts can also be removed at anytime. Pruning can be done annually, but it is not essential and only needs to be done if the plant is becoming too crowded or unruly for your landscape design.
