Betony (Stachys officinalis 'Hummelo') should be pruned in late spring or summer, and only lightly. Pruning should be limited to removing any dead or damaged stems and cutting back to the base any stems showing signs of disease or pest damage. Pruning should also be done to keep the plant's shape compact and to improve air circulation, reducing the likelihood of disease and pest damage. It is generally not necessary to prune Betony more than this, so try to keep trimming and pruning to a minimum while still allowing the plant to remain tidy.
