watering

Sweet box (Sarcococca hookeriana) should be watered once a week during the summer months, and once every 2 weeks during the winter months. For each watering, you should use approximately 1 liter (1 quart) of water. Additionally, it is important to water around the perimeter of the plant. Be sure not to overwater your sweet box; if the soil appears to be wet, you may skip a watering session.

sunlight

Sweet box prefers bright, filtered sunlight for most of the day. During the hottest and brightest parts of the day, or in areas with intense sun, the sweet box should be provided with some shade to prevent scorching of the leaves. Generally, sweet box should receive 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day and bright indirect sunlight for the remaining hours.

pruning

Sweet box (Sarcococca hookeriana) should be pruned in late spring or early summer. Pruning should be kept to a minimum, as this species doesn't require a lot of trimming. Removing dead, damaged, or diseased branches can help encourage healthy growth. You can also remove any tall branches that are competing for light or take out small secondary growths at the base of the main stem to create a more uniform shrub. As a general rule, never cut more than 1-third of the foliage.
