Chinese wisteria

Chinese wisteria should be watered regularly and consistently, particularly during hot weather. Water thoroughly when the top inch or 2 of soil is dry to the touch - about once a week for plants in containers and about every 3 days for plants in the ground during the hot summer months. During the colder months, it may only need watering once every 7 to 10 days. Make sure to water deeply to promote deep root growth and to avoid shallow-rooted plants that are prone to drought stress.

Chinese wisteria thrives in direct sunlight for at least 4-6 hours of the day to produce the best blooms. Morning or late afternoon sunlight is more desirable than intense midday sunlight which may burn the plant. It can tolerate partial shade but will flower less and produce fewer vines.

For Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis 'Alba'), pruning should be done twice a year with moderate effort. The first pruning should occur in the early spring (March or April), after the first flush of blooms have finished. During this pruning, remove the longest stems and thin out some of the side shoots, leaving about 1/3rd of them intact. This will help encourage more blooms and branching, while only taking a moderate approach to pruning. The second pruning should be done in late summer (August or September). This second pruning should focus more on the shape of the plant. If desired, the stems can be further reduced in length to form a neat, shorter shape. Lastly, side shoots can be pruned to keep the overall width of the plant under control.
