watering

Plume Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica 'Elegans') should be watered regularly. Water the plant when the top 2 inches of soil is dry. For established plants, this is usually every 7-10 days. For younger plants, water slightly more often (once every 5-7 days). During hot and dry spells, water may be needed more often. It is important to water slowly and deeply so the moisture penetrates to the roots of the plant and not just the surface level. Always avoid over-watering.

sunlight

Plume Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica 'Elegans') grows best in sunny locations. It prefers full sun to partial shade and should have at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily, for the optimal growth of foliage and flower production. Direct sunlight is necessary for the plant to synthesize chlorophyll and other processes important for health. Too little sunlight can cause the plant to yellow and stunt its development. During the hottest parts of the day, the plant should have some protection from the intense rays of the sun.

pruning

Plume Japanese cedar should be pruned from late spring to early summer (May to July). The amount of pruning will vary depending on the desired shape and form of the plant. Pruning should be minimal – no more than ⅓ of the foliage should be removed at any 1 time. Pruning more than this could damage the tree. Additionally, the branches should be pruned back to a lateral branch or to a point just above where 2 branches diverge, to maintain the attractive natural form of the tree.
