Kentucky coffee tree

The Kentucky coffee tree requires moderate watering. Water deeply about once per week during the outdoor growing season, providing approximately 1 to 1.5 inches of water for each irrigation. During periods of extremely hot or dry weather, the frequency should be increased to twice a week. It is important to avoid over-watering, as the Kentucky coffee tree is susceptible to root rot and fungus. Reduce the frequency of waterings throughout the winter months when the plant is dormant.

Kentucky coffee tree, Gymnocladus dioica, requires full sun to thrive. Ideally, it needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day, with consistent direct exposure throughout the year. When planted in an area with partial sun or partial shade, this tree's growth rate can become stunted, and it can also become much more prone to disease and insect infestations. On the other hand, too much direct sunlight can cause the foliage to burn. If planted in a sunny area, it is best to provide some shade in the afternoon when the sun is strongest.

Kentucky coffee tree should be pruned once a year, in late winter or early spring, to keep the tree looking its best and promote healthy growth. Pruning should be focused on removing any dead or diseased limbs, as well as any branches that are crossing, rubbing, or growing too close together. Branches that are too low can be removed to provide clearance for walkways and traffic. As with all pruning, take care to make clean cuts at a 45 degree angle as close to the collar (where the branch meets the trunk) as possible.
