Chamaecytisus hirsutus

Chamaecytisus hirsutus is an amazing species of plant because of its incredible flowers. This evergreen shrub boasts the prettiest yellow, upright blooms you will ever see. It grows full, dark green foliage that naturally reaches heights of up to 2.5m. The bushy twigs are covered in hairy grey and white flowers which reach about 1.5 to 2.5cm in length, making them attractive to pollinators. The flowers open in the springtime and remain present until the autumn. They are an excellent choice for both borders and containers due to their low maintenance demand. Chamaecytisus hirsutus is a marvel to behold!

watering

Water Chamaecytisus hirsutus thoroughly and deeply once every 7-10 days. Watering should begin in early spring, after the last frost, and continue through mid-fall. Increase watering frequency to twice a week during periods of hot, dry weather. Soak the soil down at least 8 inches deep and allow to dry in between waterings to prevent root rot. Avoid overhead watering to keep foliage dry and prevent potential fungal and bacterial diseases. When watering, use room temperature water and avoid soaking the foliage.

sunlight

Chamaecytisus hirsutus requires between 4-6 hours of direct sunlight throughout the day in order to thrive. It should not be exposed to excessive midday sun for too long as this may cause scorching of the foliage. Planting in a location where it will receive morning or late afternoon sun is ideal. To ensure adequate sun exposure, the plant should be kept outdoors in an open space that is well-ventilated and away from tall structures or other plantings. If kept in a container, the pot should be positioned in a sunny spot with ample space for the root system to expand and breathe.

pruning

For optimal health and production, chamaecytisus should be pruned on an annual basis, more heavily in the winter/early spring and lightly in late summer. During the winter pruning, remove up to 1 third of the plant's stems and canes to open it up, promote air circulation, allow light in and encourage new growth. Summer pruning should consist of removing only some of the spindly stems and a few of the weakest canes, while leaving the strongest canes. This will encourage more uniform and compact growth. Always use sharp, clean pruning tools to avoid introducing disease. Pruning chamaecytisus too heavily or too often can result in reduced vigor and flower production.
