watering

Autumn crocus (Colchicum 'Waterlily') should be watered once every 7-10 days when planted outdoors. It should receive 1-2 inches of water per week. During the summer months, when temperatures are higher and the soil is more prone to drying out, the plant may require more frequent watering, such as every 5-7 days. When planting indoors, make sure that the pot is adequately draining and does not become waterlogged. This species also prefers evenly moist soil- not overly wet and not completely dried out. If the soil becomes dry enough that the foliage wilts, it’s time to water it. Give it enough water to saturate the entire pot.

sunlight

The autumn crocus (Colchicum 'Waterlily') needs full sun in the spring and fall as well as part shade in the summer. It should get around 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight each day during the spring and fall, and around 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight each day during the summer months. The amount of sunlight can vary depending on the climate and location. As with most plants, the autumn crocus will benefit from some afternoon shading during the hottest months, such as July and August.

pruning

Autumn crocus (Colchicum 'Waterlily') needs minimal pruning. Pruning should be done after the flowers have faded since the flowers are produced in the fall. To remove dead or damaged foliage or flowers, use sharp, clean pruners and remove the affected material at the base of the plant. If you want to shape or neaten the plant, carefully trim any long stems back to a size that is appropriate for your Autumn crocus. Avoid removing more than a third of the stems at 1 time. You should also remove any dried corms after they have bloomed. These can be easily identified as the small, green, oval-shaped structures found on the stem of the plant. You can use your pruners and cut the stem at the base of the plant to remove the corm.
