This species is a short-lived perennial, so it may need to be pruned more heavily every few years in order to maintain its shape. Prune the top of the plant to make it more compact or to encourage bushiness. Remove up to a third of the stems, cutting back to just above a healthy bud. If there is damage from winter freezing, prune any dead stems back to the ground. Removing dead or diseased stems throughout the season will also help prevent disease from spreading.
