ox-eye daisy

Heliopsis helianthoides 'Tuscan Sun'

Ox-eye daisy (Heliopsis helianthoides 'Tuscan Sun') is an eye-catching, hardy perennial flower. Native to North America, they are easily identifiable with their bright, cheerful yellow or golden blooms that emerge on the short, upright stems from late spring into early summer. They are low-maintenance and cold-tolerant, making them an ideal choice for wildflower gardens or naturalized meadows. Thriving in a variety of soils and sun exposures, the 'Tuscan Sun' variety is especially free flowering and deer resistant.

watering

Ox-eye daisy plants require frequent, deep watering to maintain their full foliage growth. Water the plants soon after planting and every 3 to 4 days thereafter until rain occurs. Mulching is recommended for moderate, consistent moisture maintenance. In subsequent seasons, water the plants at least once a week if mild weather persists and twice a week in hot weather. The water should penetrate the soil 8 to 10 inches deep. The soil should feel moist at a depth of 6 inches. Avoid over-watering, as this may cause root rot.

sunlight

ox-eye daisy prefers full sun exposure, at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. This is especially true while the plant is blooming in the summertime. However, ox-eye daisy can also tolerate some shade. When planted in semi-shady areas, the bloom may be a bit less vibrant, but the plant can still survive and produce beautiful blooms.

pruning

Ox-eye daisy should be pruned twice per year in spring and autumn. In the early spring, cut back any dead, woody stems to the base of the plant. If the ox-eye daisies are growing in a contained area, you can lightly clip and shape them to keep their form tidy. In the autumn, the plants should be cut back to approximately 30 cm (12 inches) above ground level to promote new growth in the spring.
