pruhonicensis hybrid primula

Primula 'Wanda'

Primula 'Wanda' is a pruhonicensis hybrid primula, a lush perennial with large, bright-pink, bell-shaped flower heads that bloom in spring. The leaves are large and serrated and a rich, dark green. The plants can reach up to 8" tall and 24" wide with a clumping rosette form. It's an easy-care plant that does best in full sun to partial shade and needs some protection from strong winds. It's tolerant of some drought, but prefers consistently moist soil. Prune dead flowers and divide the clumps every three to four years. Primula 'Wanda' is a spectacular addition to flower borders and mixed beds, and makes a delightful cut flower.

watering

Primula 'Wanda' prefers consistent moisture, so it is best to water this plant when the top inch of soil feels dry. During the summer months, it should be watered about once a week, making sure to drench the soil, and during the winter months, waterings can be reduced to every 2 or 3 weeks. For best results, water in the morning so any moisture on the leaves can dry off before nightfall.

sunlight

Primula 'Wanda' is a hybrid pruhonicensis and does best with morning to mid-day sunlight and a minimum of 4 hours of direct sunlight each day. The plant should be placed in a position which receives cooling shade for part of the day, such as in a semi-shaded location or under a deciduous tree. It is best to provide filtered light rather than direct sun when possible, as stronger sunlight can cause leaf scorching. During the flowering period, it may be necessary to provide additional shade in order to prevent bud damage.

pruning

Primula 'Wanda' (Pruhonicensis Hybrid Primula) should be pruned once a year during late winter or early spring. The amount of pruning should be light but should get rid of dead and damaged foliage and any unwanted flowering stalks. The best time to prune is immediately after the plant has finished flowering. It is important to remember not to remove more than 1-third of the foliage as this will have an adverse effect on the overall health of the plant.
