daylily

Hemerocallis 'Mini Pearl'

The daylily (Hemerocallis 'Mini Pearl') is a hardy, lovely perennial. Its showy flowers produce spectacular blooms in shades of pink with warm yellow undertones and white centers. Though its petite stature makes it better suited to rock gardens than large flower beds, it's ideal for patio containers. Thriving in full to partial sun, the Mini Pearl blooms each spring and often again in summer and fall. Unlike many other daylily varieties, its foliage dies back in winter for a tidy, hibernating look. It's a low-maintenance pick and doesn't require much water once established. Its bright, small blooms bring vibrant color even to cramped spaces.

watering

Daylilies should be watered deeply once per week during their growing season. Water until it is seen draining from the bottom of the pot. The planting bed should also be kept moist but not overly wet to avoid root rot. Water in well and allow the top 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) of soil to dry out slightly between watering. When the weather is hot or the daylily is in full bloom, more frequent watering may be necessary. During the winter months, water the daylilies less often, only when the top 2-3 inches (5-8 cm) of soil becomes dry.

sunlight

Daylilies (Hemerocallis 'Mini Pearl') should receive full sun in order to thrive and produce the best blooms. Ideally, they should be planted in an area that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day during the growing season. During the hottest summer months, some afternoon shade may be beneficial. In shadier areas, flowering may be reduced and the plants may become leggy.

pruning

Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Mini Pearl') requires very little pruning. Occasionally deadhead the blooms if desired; this will help encourage rebloom and tidy the foliage. Cut the foliage back to the ground in late fall to early spring, and it is also beneficial to divide the clumps every 3-5 years.
