Hosta 'Great Expectations'

Hosta 'Great Expectations' is a beautiful, clump-forming perennial varietal of the Hosta plantain lily family. With its showy, variegated foliage and its ability to thrive in a variety of conditions, it is a popular favorite for both formal and informal gardens. It is an excellent border plant and will form a dense mound of green, yellow and white, heart-shaped leaves, which will reach heights of up to 16 inches. Blooms can reach a height of 3 to 4 feet and a diameter of over 1.5 feet. Its colors are stunning - a range of lavender to golden yellow - and fragrant white blossoms appear in summer. Hosta 'Great Expectations' is hardy to zone 3, requires partial shade and moist soil with good drainage, and will fill borders or beds with a lush canopy of colorful foliage!

watering

For Hosta 'Great Expectations', water thoroughly when the soil feels dry to the touch. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings as this plant does not like overly wet soil. You can water this plant once or twice a week in average weather, but you may need to increase the frequency in hotter climates or during prolonged dry periods. Try not to allow the soil to dry out completely as this may cause the leaves to become wilted.

sunlight

Hostas prefer partial shade. Hosta 'Great Expectations' should receive approximately 3 to 4 hours of direct sunlight each day. Plant them near a southern window or under light shade of tall trees for maximum success. The morning sun helps the hosta to transition from its night-time dormant phase to its daytime active phase. Late afternoon sun, however, can cause leaf burn. If possible, avoid direct sun for any Hosta during the hottest part of day (after 11 am).

pruning

Hosta 'Great Expectations' should be pruned in early spring just before new growth begins. Remove any old, ratty, or dead leaves and any damaged stalks from the previous season. Cut the plant back to the desired height; this will encourage mass in the center of the plant and create a full, lush look. Deadheading (removing spent blooms) is also recommended to encourage a second round of blooms in late summer. Prune off any shoots that have moved away from the established habit of the plant, such as shoots that cross or rub each other. Always be sure to wear gloves and garden shears when pruning.
