common hyacinth

Hyacinthus orientalis 'Woodstock'

Common hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis 'Woodstock') is an easy to grow perennial bulb plant. Its distinctively flattened, dark blue-violet flowers are sweetly fragrant and bloom in late spring. A sturdy, clump-forming plant, it grows up to 16 inches in full sun to part shade. Its robust stems make outstanding cut flowers for arrangement indoors. The blooms also attract hummingbirds and bees. Its flat green foliage adds a rich, textural element to the garden. To encourage prolific blooming, plant in well-draining soil and avoid over-watering. Common hyacinth makes a graceful addition to flower beds and beds of wildflowers. Its blooms add charm and beauty to any garden.

watering

Common hyacinths should be watered to keep the soil evenly moist. Water regularly during periods of active growth, and only enough to keep the soil from drying out. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings, but water thoroughly when needed. During winter, water sparingly and if necessary, water no more than once a month.

sunlight

Common hyacinths should be grown in full sun or partial shade locations. When grown in full sun, provide the plant with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day during the peak growing season. If grown in partial shade, provide the plant with 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day during the peak growing season.

pruning

Common hyacinths should be pruned in late winter to early spring, after flowering has finished. To prune for shape and size, remove about 1-third of the lower growth at soil level. Pruning at the base of the plant will also encourage new blooming shoots. Deadheading spent flowers by clipping or pinching them off will also help encourage new blooms and maintain a neat appearance. To keep the plant from getting too large, top prune it back in mid summer. Trim the top part of the spike and leave about 1-third of the previous year’s growth before the blooming season begins again.
