Iris 'Winesap'

Iris 'Winesap' is a tall bearded reblooming iris native to North America. It is a stunningly beautiful perennial with big vibrant blooms in dark purple or violet colors. The strong tall flower stalk can reach heights of up to 50 to 90 cm (20 to 36") and the orange-red-purple flowers reach 7cm (2.7") in diameter, each having a frilly yellow center. This plant requires well-draining, loamy soils and full sun to partial shade. It is very tolerant of drought and blooms from May to July, reblooming until the fall. The Iris 'Winesap' plant will make a beautiful addition to any garden.

watering

Tall bearded reblooming iris (Iris 'Winesap') should be watered so that the soil stays moist but not soggy. During the active growing season, it should be watered about twice a week, using enough water to reach the lower part of the root zone. During dry spells or periods of intense sun and heat, increase watering to 3 times a week or more. During a cold winter season, reduce watering to once a week or less. Be sure to monitor soil moisture levels carefully, as it is important to water thoroughly when needed, but to also avoid over-watering. Water until the soil can no longer absorb any more moisture.

sunlight

Tall bearded reblooming iris plants (Iris 'Winesap') require full sunshine in order to bloom throughout the growing season. During the first weeks of spring when the plants are emerging, they should be provided with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Full sun will continue to be beneficial for the duration of the summer months, allowing the plants to thrive and rebloom. In late fall and early winter the amount of sun should be decreased to 4-5 hours a day, as the plants enter a state of dormancy and need less light to remain healthy.

pruning

Tall bearded reblooming iris (Iris 'Winesap') should be pruned annually in late winter or early spring. Pruning should be done in 2 steps. First, remove and discard any dead foliage, as well as any flower stalks (or stalks with flower buds). This helps to promote healthy and robust blooming. Second, cut back foliage by 1/3-1/2 of the total height. This will help the clump to look healthier and fuller, and will also stimulate a strong rebloom. Regular pruning helps to keep a healthy, strong, and attractive clump of irises.
